So, you're looking for a job. Maybe you're a college graduate, eager to nail your first interview that could set you on the pathway towards your dream career. Or maybe you're simply tired of your current position and hoping to find the opportunity for something better and new. No matter what the reason, there is always one thing standing in the way of you and what could potentially be a turning point in your life or your career. And that one thing is the interview.
As someone who has conducted hundreds of interviews with hopefuls, I can tell you one thing, you can kiss that potential position goodbye if you don't know how to interview properly. And it is for the sake of your future career that I have compiled a list of do's and don'ts if you're hoping to walk away with a job offer in hand.
Do try and repeat the interviewer's name after introductions and throughout the conversation. This shows the interviewer that you are paying attention and also makes you also appear more personable.
Don't use slang during your interview, even if your interviewer seems young or friendly. It makes the interviewer question your ability to function professionally in the workplace.
Do allow yourself time to pause if you need a moment to think by saying something like, "that's a great question, let me think about how I'd like to answer it," instead of filling the empty space with sentence fillers like "um" and "uhhh" while you're thinking.
Don't talk over the interviewer or try and finish their sentences for them. This gives the impression that you are not a good listener and comes across as very rude.
Do remember to breathe, relax, and let the best parts of your personality shine through!
Combine these five things with professional attire, eye contact, and a good handshake and you will be well on your way to getting the "yes" and being fast tracked to the career of your dreams!
